What is Medicines: The Inside Story?
FAQs Project Director's Message

Medicines: The Inside Story brings science to life through an exciting look at how and why medicines work, the history of medicines, current medicinal trends, the future of medicinal research, and the ever-changing role medicines play in society. The endeavor features a four-year traveling museum exhibition, a high school education program presented on CD-ROM, a planetarium presentation and an academic symposium. Medicines: The Inside Story is designed to provide consumers with a better understanding of medicines and inspire a new generation of scientists and healthcare providers.

Museum Exhibition
Visitors to the museum exhibition take a multimedia journey through the world of medicines and wonders of the human body via live demonstrations, video programs, multimedia displays, interactive games and traditional museum exhibits. Elements from the exhibition are also available on CD-ROM for use at home or work.

Education Program
The education program gives science teachers the tools to bring science to life for high school students. Based on the CD-ROM, it provides 22 lesson plans for teachers and a series of hands-on activities for students along with a virtual tour of the exhibition. Medicines has already distributed over 1,500 free CD-ROMs to high school science classes nationwide.

Planetarium Presentation
InnerSpace, the 30-minute planetarium show, takes viewers on an amazing journey into the body, through the skin, into arteries, organs, cells, and the immune and nervous systems.

Symposium
The two-day academic symposium, held March 28-29, 1996, at the Carter Center in Atlanta, featured 20 peer-reviewed papers that expanded upon the exhibition themes. Former U. S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop presented the keynote address. In the summer of 1997 the papers will be published as a book by the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy.
